Overview

Sea Wolf (not to be confused with the original 1976 game of the same name) is a first-person naval combat game developed and released by Coastal Amusements for arcades (using PC-based hardware) in 2008.

Based on Midway's 1976 game of the same name, Sea Wolf has players firing torpedoes from their stationary submarine at enemy ships moving along the screen for score. By default, it is configured as a video redemption game, where sinking ships also gives players tickets (with a bonus ship in the far distance giving a roaming jackpot when sunk).

Unlike the original game, which uses a periscope controller that players look through, this version has players sitting on a bench while moving a fixed-gun mount (which resembles the handle of a periscope). The cabinet is unique for the "radar" between the gun and the screen, using five lines of lights to show which of the five cannons is highlighted by the player.

It later received an update in December 2008, known as Sea Wolf: The Next Mission, which add a variety of new "missions" (each with different time-of-day and weather). This version was later sold in a cheaper "upright" cabinet, with the "radar" removed and players now swiveling a periscope handle protruding from the cabinet at chest-height. A larger, more-elaborate version of the sit-down cabinet, known as Sea Wolf 55, was also developed that replaces the "radar" with lighted tubes resembling cannons.

The game also received a mobile port for iOS devices by Athyrio Games on January 9, 2012.
