Derail Valley is an indie VR-supported open-world train driving simulation game in development by Altfuture, with a planned full release for the PC. It was originally released in Early Access format on January 18, 2019, and prior to that received multiple pre-beta demo releases since December 2016.
Set in a fictional, barren, open world, Derail Valley has players building a train driving career by performing freight deliveries using multiple types of diesel and steam locomotives. Designed with support for VR full-body controls in mind, the game takes place in a free-form first-person perspective with most of the game's functions (such as each train's levers and buttons) being realistically interactive.
Unlike most other train driving simulators, Derail Valley takes a free-form career-based approach to the genre, rather than one based on fixed scenarios. Players earn money for randomly-generated delivery jobs, which can be used to pay for additional certifications (to unlock new types of jobs), for servicing the trains, and for paying off debts (occurred by damaging trains, traincars, and cargo).
Similar to some other freight-oriented train driving games, Derail Valley focuses on immersion with both the train driving and the delivery process, with players required to perform certain actions to complete their delivery (such as moving their trains into position, coupling/decoupling traincars, and managing railroad switches). The game is heavily physics-based, with the possibility for derailment and, for certain types of cargo, catastrophic explosions.
